• Bay City Burrito (Hawthorn)

I was so excited when Bay City Burrito opened in St Kilda. (See my review on the St Kilda Bay City Burrito).  The Hawthorn location has now been open for several years, it serves up the same fun, fresh and tightly wrapped burritos in a relaxed atmosphere. But the menu has developed to now include vegan options and more vego ones too.

They are busy with take-away, lone diners, and friends wanting a casual get-together. The service is mostly friendly, but at busy times seems stressed.

The Burri-chi burrito is a Korean/Californian/Mexican fusion with kimchi, tofu, avocado, black bean, sweet corn and rice. It arrives expertly wrapped with everything made fresh.

The Pulled Jackfruit burrito was my first taste of the trendy BBQed jackfruit craze. This comes with vegan cheese, brown rice, corn, pineapple, coriander and tomato. It was a bit heavy on the rice but the flavours were delicious and I definitely became a fan of BBQed jackfruit.

Another winner is the Popcorn Cauliflower. Cauliflower has been pulled into bite-sized pieces, crumbed and deep fried as you order. These were crunchy, spice and more-ish, served with chipotle aioli.

Like the St Kilda Bay City Burrito, there is a focus on quality, while still be casual and convenient. The meals might be a little more expensive than other burrito shops in the area, but the sit-down space is more welcoming and comfortable, the dishes are more creative and everything is made fresh. They also serve beer and Mexican inspired cocktails.
