I am truly benefiting from boutique brewing being a thing now in Melbourne. I first discovered Bad Shepherd at the East Malvern Food and Wine Festival, loved their Hazelnut Brown, later tried their Pale Ale and loved that even more.
This little brewery is run by husband and wife team, Dereck and Diti Hales. It is located in Cheltenham with a busy eatery to help you enjoy the craft brews. Even better, there is a full section of the menu devoted to flavoursome, diner style, vegan fare.
There is a small area out the front next to the busy road, but most of the tables are inside the clean cement hall. You can buy beer take-away, try a selection, or just grab a pint from on-tap.
Most of the food is over-priced but fun, a bowl of vegan nachos is $20, a burger is $18 without sides. The curly fries were a treat, super crispy spirals at $9 for a big bowl. There are also salads for those wanting healthier options.
But the best part of a visit to Bad Shepherd is definitely the beer. I already knew I loved the Victoria pale ale and the hazelnut brown. We tasted the following: raspberry wheat ale, passionfruit sour, Reserve Road draught, double choc hazelnut brown. Tasted against the Victoria Pale Ale, our original favourite remained the winner. The fruity ones were enjoyable, and the double chocolate hazelnut brown was delicious, but very rich – you definitely need to be in the mood for these ones. The Reserve Road draught was tasty but a bit too hoppy for me.
The prices of the food make eating out here a real treat, the beer is expensive too, but definitely worth it. We have been dropping in for take-aways to enjoy on our own balcony instead.
