O’Wok is the latest venture from Okra owner, Lawrence Fu , opened only a month ago. The principle is simple, good Chinese food for sharing with handmade dumplings, noodles and a new vegan menu coming out in the next fortnight.
As many vegans and vegetarians would know, ordering a dish without meat in China is as high risk as a weekend away without an umbrella, jumper and hat.
The atmosphere is relaxed and early on a Wednesday night, most visits were for take-away. But it is worth lingering. The red brick walls and wooden tables are perfect for groups, and the food is best shared between many (the more friends you have, the more dishes you get to taste).
Apart from the typical fare of veggies with yummy sauces and fresh dumplings, the vegan menu will include ‘vegan’ versions of popular faves.
The vegan lamb was cooked in spices like a dukka with sesame, onions, spring onions and capsicum in red and green. The vegan lamb needed the moisture of the veggies. I really enjoyed the flavours of this dish.
The vegan chicken nuggets were more moist and quite more-ish with the sweet chilli sauce served as an accompaniment. These were served hot and crispy on the outside.
The vegan deep fried chicken with chilli pepper was made with bite-sizes of vegan protein, chopped dried chilli and spring onion. This one was very spicy and definitely one to share.
Dessert includes banana fritter, sesame ice-cream and coconut jelly. These are not vegan but the ice-cream and banana are vegetarian.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant for large groups, especially with family or to celebrate a birthday with friends. It is spacious enough to enjoy conversation and there are many tempting treats on the menu. Next time I will be trying the dumplings and chilli eggplant.
