Just Falafs (Fitzroy North)

As a lover of Middle Eastern cuisine, and being vegetarian, it is no wonder I constantly have my ears pricked for recommendations of the best falafel in Melbourne. A good falafel is not just about texture, it is about flavour and accompaniments as well.

I had been eyeing Just Falfs ever since having a below average meal just across the road. The whole time I ate my below average meal across the road, I was craving to just run across the street and eat falafel instead. Then another blogger told me Just Falafs was their favourite.

Well, that had me. There is a reason why people flock here at every time of the day and into the night. The menu is modern – this Israeli goodness with a Melbourne vibe. The falafel plates and pitas both come with four massive falafels moulded in ice-cream scoops before being dropped fresh into the deep fryer.

The salads are what I’d aspire to for summer BBQs (without the BBQ). The roasted pumpkin with caramelised onion plate looks delicious, as does the broccoli salad… and to be honest everything looks fricking amazing enough to make my mouth water.

Everything is vegetarian. The staff are young and the music is pumping out electronic chill.

Spoilt for choice, I opted for the haloumi pita. It was slit narrowly at the top and stuffed full of falafels, hummus, thick fried slabs of haloumi, soft roasted cauliflower, tahini and pickled cabbage. The fillings had been layered, but with the size of the falafels, it needed a bit more tahini in the middle. The cauliflower / falafel combo was a winner.

The inside of the falafels was flavoursome with onion and herbs. The mixture was light rather than being densely packed together. The outside was crisp. These were some seriously good contenders for the best falafels in Melbourne.

I totally enjoyed my pita but next time, I will go for a plate so that I can mix all the flavours up myself. To be honest, I will probably be working my way through the entire menu here. Yes, it was that good.
