• Baby (Richmond)

With the famous Chin Chin under his belt, there were high expectations when Chris Lucas opened pizzeria, Baby, in Church Street Richmond. Chin Chin was still drawing queues years later, and everyone expected new restaurant, Baby, to be just as good.

The vibe here is as cool as Chin Chin and the even more recent Hawker Hall. The fare is simple Italian food with premium ingredients, a rich selection of wines, and salads and pastas.
As a pizza lover, I am a regular at this spot. A few months in I found the food hit and miss, but at my latest visits, the pizzas have been consistently good every time.

Of course the eggplant pizza is a favourite. With expertly kneaded dough, chunks of my favourite vegetable, chilli and mozzarella, what is there not to love?

The funghi is another fabulous vegetarian option with a white cheese base, taleggio and thinly sliced mushrooms.

New to the menu is an assortment of mozzarellas prepared in different ways – smoked, cooked, fresh…

The Cavolo e Pispelli salad is also a treat with cabbage, peas, Reggiano, mint, radish and chilli.

For wines, I prefer the reds. The staff will be more than happy to help you find one to your taste.
In usual Lucas style, it is the young, trendy and foodies who flock to this place.

Bookings are recommended on Friday and Saturday nights. You can watch the dishes prepared from the bar, or enjoy a sparkling outside on a balmy night.
