I’m loving the rise of vegan food in Melbourne, and Tonic and Grace has the perfect balance of healthy, vegan food, with optional (non-vegan) extras. Opened early 2018, this café is already carving a name for itself with discerning foodies – vegan or not!
The inside is cosy, the courtyard is just far enough away from the main road to be peaceful. The service is extremely friendly and obliging. The vibe was quiet when we went mid-week, but with an overdue catch-up and lots of chatter between ourselves, the vibe of other tables was not missed.
There are so many tempting options on the menu. The Mariachi Bowl is Mexican inspired with corn, salsa and baked beans. The Harajuku Lover is a Japanese pancake with lots of extras. The Eggs Benefit was totally tempting served on cauliflower steaks. But today I opted for the Protein Plate, a full and colourful dish, with enough wholesome goodness to last me all day.
The Protein Plate was centred with a sweet potato waffle. This was delicious. The outside was crisp, but the inside was so soft and sweet. I would return just for this. Also on the plate were grilled mushrooms, wilted baby spinach, house-made baked beans in tomato, a swoosh of pea puree, two poached eggs and I also opted for haloumi. This dish can also be made vegan.
The coffee was weak and milky, but the food made up for it.
I’d return to try the other breakfast options, especially with my vegan friends.
