Set amongst the big offices and warehouses of Nunawading, Little Hugh is a modern but cosy space with lots of natural light, natural wood and green felt covered benches. Its menu is small but sufficient, focused on brunch-style favourites.
I ordered the Spanish Eggs minus, kransky. These were served in a terracotta dish, with pre-spiced potatoes, all cooked with oregano tomato, strips of capsicum giving a slight crunchy, wilted baby spinach and tiny pieces of well-done red onion. With potatoes and tomatoes and chilli – this was a warming dish, perfect for a late winter lunch. Two fried eggs sat on top, which were unfortunately undercooked, with the top white still clear. Two slices of thin, lightly buttered sourdough sat to the side. This dish really grew on me as I consumed it. It is not huge in serving, but enough, and well-priced at $16.
The food arrived quickly, but it seemed that one of the staff were new, when I visited. The food arrived quickly, but I had to go up to order and to pay, simply because she not observant enough so look and see who needed what. Still, service was very friendly and professional. And the barista made a very good hot chocolate to finish my meal. I love it when the chocolate is mixed into the froth!
Overall, I would definitely visit this place again. There are not many vegetarian options on the menu. But there are also focaccias and pies, which go to half price at the end of the day.
