• Collective Espresso (Camberwell)

With all the reviews and IG posts of this place lately, you think it was the next big thing. In fact, Collective Espresso is a tiny shop, right by Camberwell station with a single, shared table down the middle and limited seated at the front.

Communter coffee is the go. And who wouldn’t want to start the day with a well-made latte and a smile?

But somehow the little kitchen manages to put on a full and creative brunch menu too. This includes the usual toast, eggs and sides; healthy salad; gravity waffles (which you may have seen all over Instagram) and heavier dishes for lunch.

The herb crumbed mushrooms are vegan too. The mushrooms were crumbed and then fried and served on English muffins with vegan trufflenaise. Unfortunately the trufflenaise made the muffins go soggy and would be better placed on top of the mushrooms to get he full flavour. It was also served with spinach. My food was well made, but for vegetarians the menu lacked excitement. It will be the coffee that I return for.

The coffee was very good: pretty and tasty with a balanced blend.

Coffee and news

Vegan herbed and crumbed mushrooms

Most of the people sitting around me were alone, reading the newspaper and relaxing for a morning ritual of coffee and focus. Added to the relaxed clientele was the relaxed 90s pop that was played quietly enough to still hear the person next to you. Cold metal stools and a small space, this is not the place to linger for long.
