• Mesob (Northcote)

Community. We’ve missed it. But it is still central to everything about this Ethiopian eatery on Northcote’s High Street.

The name means breadbasket, and the traditional injera (flat bread made with teff flour) is the focus on the meal. The large circles of injera are heaped with curries, shared and eaten with fingers.

Whilst you can order curries individually, the vegetarian and vegan share platters give a delightful taste of some favourites. I love the Yatakilt Alicha: cabbage, potatoes and carrots with onions and garlic. The Miser Wot is equally delicious: red lentils with lots of garlic and ginger. Not only is the food delicious, but with so much variety, it makes for an extremely healthy vegetarian meal.

Vegan Ethiopian Platter

Half the dishes on the menu are vegan. And all the main are gluten free. There is also wine, beer and Ethiopian inspired cocktails.

The atmosphere and staff are vibrant and friendly. This is a fun place for a get-together with friends. Best to book in advance.
