• Spitaki (Fairfield)

Spitaki. It means little house. And owner John Ghionis wants his guest to feel at home.
I discovered this casual Greek eatery on a drive by. Late on a Thursday night is was buzzing, and I vowed I would return. Track forwards a few weeks, and I am sitting at a wooden table, with the music blaring and older Greek women complaining about the noise. I felt right at home.

Souvlaki is the specialty, and the vegetarian option is filled with halloumi, salad and chips. The salad was fresh, the halloumi fried and plentiful, the bread authentic. The sauce was extra garlicky.

The potato cakes were too tempting to pass up. These were crisp and hot with soft potato slices inside.

They also serve salads, dips, saganaki, chips, dolmades and Greek doughnuts.
The food is good – simple, fresh and tasty. The atmosphere even better. And the service friendly. Patrons are encouraged to bring a framed photo to make it feel like home. It is obviously popular with locals.

I can see myself getting addicted to this place. I love that the kitchen is open late and that you can enjoy it alone or in big groups. The décor is eclectic and fun. Whilst there are not many vego options, there is enough to keep me interested for a while…
