• Short Straw (Hawthorn)

When I think of our typical Melbourne Café, I think of this: exposed red brick, coffees perfected to the ninth degree, avo on toast and youngesters with beards or tattoos at La Marzocco. In the last decade, Hawthorn has become a suburb beyond reckoning for its café culture. From the early days of Hirte and Toleman’s Liar Liar to the Makin and Delany’s Axil Coffee Roasters, to more recent and super Instagrammable spots like Fika; there are now so many superb ones in this locale, that the most difficult question has become where to choose.

Short Straw has neatly fitted itself into the vibe. Think modern lay-out, plants, illustrated walls and coolness oozing from every staff member.

The coffee here is delicious: smooth with a thick froth, neither too strong or too milky but perfectly balanced.

The menu is impressive too. Choose from common brunch faves like oats, avo smash, a poke bowl or eggs on toast. Or more substantial burgers or breakfast spreads.

If you’re feeling hungry, the Long Straw can be made vegetarian but substituting bacon with avo. This dish was a treat with a big flat mushroom cooked with a hint of garlic, a heap of wilted baby spinach, a quarter of an avo cut longways, BBQ flavoured relish, a crisp chive rosti, bright green smooth pesto, and runny yolk eggs.
