• Mr Joe All Day (Richmond)

Mr Joe All Day is the new child of Martin and Yang Sun, opened earlier this year. With a simple monotone interior, bench seating and shoulder to shoulder bar stools, the atmosphere is not quite a relaxed Izakaya, but more funky Melbourne café. The design is geared towards evenings, and there is bench seating out the front for those wanting sunlight.

The menu is limited for brunch, fuller after 2pm for afternoon snacks and dinner. There is also an array of delicious wines (I was instantly drawn to the black label Balgownie Chardonnay – a known fave since a cellar door visit), juices and mocktails. Coffee is Seven Seeds.

If you are vegetarian, mashed greens will be your breakfast option until 2pm. The afternoon menu includes many more treats like eggplant rice, stir fry and croquettes.

Edamame are always a treat. These were fresh but strangely left on the stems so that we had to use our fingers to rip them off.

The Korean fried cauliflower was delicious. It was crumbed, fried and topped with kimchi and a bright chilli sauce and sesame seeds. These pieces were not cut to mouthfuls either – making it awkward to eat politely with chopsticks (like the edamame). The cauliflower was cooked just the right amount so that it was cooked through, fresh and not limp. The outer was crisp and hot without being too oily. The sauce was delicious. This is a good dish to share as it is packed with flavour.

For bigger shared plates, try the Nanban stir fried tofu. Packed with lots of garlic, chilli, hot basil and coriander, this is another dish made for sharing.

Next time I will be trying the pumpkin and edamame croquettes and the Nanban eggplant don.

The hot chocolate is served in jugs with the chocolate mixed into the froth. I would have liked it stronger, but it was still enjoyable.

One great thing about this place is that, yes, it is open all day. If you are like me and like your lunch or dinner at 4:30pm, Mr Joe has you sorted. The food is best accompanied with friends and wine. There is also a bottomless brunch option include a meal from the brunch menu and 2-hours of mimosa, Brut Cuvee, Watermelon punch or Asahi Dry. Bottomless brunch is available from 11am to 3pm every weekend for $49.
