It is no secret that Melbournians love their gin. Boutique distilleries are popping up all over the state. Asking the bartender for “a gin and tonic please” long ago overtook “a Fosters mate, and throw a shrimp on the barbie while you’re at it”. As our beverage tastes have gentrified, we are becoming more discerning of quality and uniqueness.
Sacred Spirits was brought to life by Ian Hart and Hilary Whitney in London 2008. They created an exclusive vacuum distilling process and were soon winning awards for it. The pair incorporate dozens of botanicals including juniper, cardamom and frankincense to give an exception quality and inimitable taste.
Sacred Spirits have just launched their full range in Australia including their signature Sacred Gin, Cardamom Gin, Bottled Negroni, Organic Vodka, Old Tom Gin, Pink Grapefruit Gin, Rosehip Cup and Organic Sloe Gin.
Truth revealed, I don’t actually like Gin (total crime I know), so instead, I was sent a bottle of the Rosehip Cup to try.
Hart and Whitney created the Rosehip Cup as an alternative to Campari in a Negroni. As they developed the recipe, they discovered the bittersweet taste was perfect as intended, but also instead of Aperol in Spritzes or even with soda.
Made with rosehips, rhubarb, orange, ginger and many other secret ingredients. Alone it has a herbal taste with a slight bitterness that doesn’t overpower. The flavour reminds me of Sarsaparilla with a lingering bitter orange aftertaste. This is going to be the perfect aperitif with ice over summer, and a fabulous (and more interesting) Spritz than the usual made with Aperol.
