• Mammoth (Armadale)

Just as Melbourne has become known for its coffee, it seems every suburb is now boasting of wonderful cafes. The posh neighbourhood of Armadale with its designer shops and equally designer clad clientele, would be no exception.

Mammoth was opened by husband and wife duo Loren and Jamie McBride in 2015. With café success already under their belt (touchwood, Barry and Pillar of Salt) it is no surprise that this new south-side hang out became the go-to.

The interior is sleek, modern but practical with bend seats, chairs with backs and the small bar for coffees near the entrance.

Weekday mornings there is still a crowd as locals sit with their laptops, construction workers posted near by order coffees in bulk, and uni students get their take-aways before boarding the train (only minutes’ walk away.

Despite a quieter ambience when I arrived at 9am, it took a while to be seated, even longer to get a menu, and even longer to order. At least coffee and food were made quick.

My flat white was with pretty art, a thick, froth and an earthy taste. It was the Roosevelt House Blend.

There are limited vegetarian option on the menu. Avocado toast, a sauerkraut and cheese toastie, or chili scrambled eggs. I opted for the latter which came with mushrooms instead of bacon for the veggie version. As it was put in front of me, the first thing I noticed was the smell: buttered garlic and cheese, yum. A big chunk of toast sat to the side in a single slice. Moist eggs were heaped on top with spring onion slightly cooked, a hint of chilli and thin gratings of parmesan on top.

I admit, it is a pleasant place to sit and read the paper, the coffee was interesting and tasty, and the food was of a strong standard (without all the fuss of other pretty but less delicious places nearby). It would be nice to have a few more options on the menu. But at least what they do do, is done well.
