• Madame K's (Fitzroy)

Madame K’s is a hot spot for vegans and hipsters alike. Along the busy strip of Brunswick Street, it has built a name for quality vegan food that’s full on flavour. It is best to share, then you get to try more.

Here on a Saturday night, it was packed.

The betel leaves were a flavour explosion with quinoa, cashew, coconut and a sweet tangy sauce.

The san choi bao was another fun starter with mouthfuls of peas, corn and tofu in mini bowls of fresh lettuce.

The lamb sliders were with mock meat, wrapped in roti and made tasty with a caramelised sauce prompting us to order a second serving. The roti was hot and crisp, the fake lamb was more like a dose of thick protein.

'Lamb' sliders, we ordered extra of these.

We also ordered a red curry. It had lots of sauce and coconut, but was still flavoursome with spice.

The tofu stir-fry was pretty standard, but tasty with lots of tofu.

For dessert we tried the coconut mousse. This was served in little shallow round dishes with a base of glutinous and rice flours, then coconut cream and shredded young coconut. It was more interesting than more-ish, but we still enjoyed it.

The best thing about Madame K’s was the variety. As a vegetarian, it is rare to have such choice on the menu. While we all had our favourites, every dish was well-made and tasty. The atmosphere is lively while still be attractive, but it does close early (we were the last there at 9:45pm and it was obvious the staff were waiting for us to leave). Make sure you book in advance and share as many dishes as you can.
