• Gardiner and Field (Armadale)

Set along the back streets, by the tennis courts and park on Union Street, this little café is hidden away, in a quiet corner, for a quiet coffee and meal.  There are so many cafes along the main roads of Armadale, that this one could easily be missed. But still, it served up good coffee and decent food.

Arriving on a weekday morning, the peacefulness of this place was its first impression. Two young men serving – one coffee, one taking orders, payment and running food. Limited chatter, polite customers and soft music; all this makes Gardiner and Field a nice spot to relax.

I ordered the mushroom, cheese and spinach croquettes, which were on as a special. The croquettes were really soft inside and crunchy outside. The halloumi had been cut into little chips, battered and then fried. The eggs were perfectly poached. It was a big serving and interesting flavours. No flavour enhanced or complimented the others, but each was tasty stand-alone.

Croquettes with the lot!

The coffee was lovely, strong and sturdy.
