Future Future has become the new cool place for those in the Richmond locale ever since it opened late last year. It is brought to you by the same team who created Congress, the trendy Collingwood wine bar. The cuisine is Japanese fusion (think your usual favourites with a twist), and the look is typically Melbourne (think exposed red brick, a mix of high tables with wooden chairs and stools).
The light is dim, alongside the brickwork is silver lettering: FUTURE, it says in a typeface out of a science fiction movie. Even on week nights it is buzzing.
There are several vegetarian options on the menu for small plates, only one for mains, but enough to keep any foodie interested.
Let’s start with my favourite: the pumpkin agedashi tofu with parsnip crisps and tempura sauce. The texture is between silken tofu and Chinese style pumpkin pancake, crispy on the outside. It is served hot with cold radish in the typical agedashi style. This is the dish I would go back for.
The fried eggplant with chili oil is also good. The eggplant is well cooked and soft, the flavour is pleasant. This is a nice dish to share.
For bigger plates, the mushroom donburi is the only option for vegos. This is rice topped with tempura enoki mushrooms and pumkin, grilled king oyster mushrooms, crispy kale, served with tempura sauce. It was definitely the fanciest donburi I’ve ever tried. The tempura was crispy and I enjoyed the assortment of the mushrooms.
Overall the food was tasty. I loved the pumpkin agedashi, but it will be a while before I go back (just because I would be eating the same thing). The other vegetarian dishes on the menu are all small plates: eggplant skewers, white miso cucumber, grilled zucchini and okonomiyaka. Still, it was delicious and I really enjoyed it. It would also be a fun place for drinks with light snacks.
Opening hours:
Monday to Thursday 5:30pm to 11:00pm
Friday and Saturday 12:00pm to 11:00pm
