• Zanini (St Kilda East)

With its success in Elwood since opening in 2002, Zanini recently opened a sister restaurant in St Kilda East. Still serving authentic pizzas, pastas, sides and desserts, the new location is still being discovered by locals and pizza lovers alike.

On a Sunday evening, the tables were busy with young families and couples. The staff will bring out the Textas, and there is a children’s menu too (including mini pizzas, pastas, nuggets and calamari).

Delicious Italian beer, red, white and sparkling on tap, make it fun for the adults too. We had the Premium Italian Lager (Veneto) on tap and kept ordering more. It was malty and flavoursome without being too hoppy.

There are several vegetarian pizza options including the Tartufata with mushrooms and truffle cream, Margherita and a classic Vegetariana. I opted for the latter (of course, it has eggplant). The pizza was traditional and delicious with a wood-fired base, grilled zucchini and eggplant, and lots of wet, runny buffalo mozzarella. Delicious.

The pasta was also more-ish. The Ravioli Mezzaluna was served in big parcels of fresh pasta, filled with fresh ricotta and spinach, and topped with Napoli sauce and parmesan. The pasta was thick and al dente. It was the best pasta I have had in a while (and I often eat good pasta).

There were so many tempting desserts: tiramisu, Italian doughnuts, souffle… I will have to come back.
