• Gontran Cherrier Boulangerie (Hawthorn)

Celebrity Chef, Gontran Cherrier, opened his first Australian bakery in Smith Street in 2016. The Hawthorn location soon followed in September 2017. This French chef, with three generations of baking behind him, is now a well-known name in Melbourne, Paris and Singapore, Japan and South Korea.

It is not just about bread – no French bakery is. But it is the bread that really shows you his talents and the inspiration of the Gontran Cherrier brand.

The baguette is sourdough, chewy and crusty. There are a range of perfect loaves, to suit any taste.

My favourite is the almond croissant. This is light, buttery, just like a French croissant should be.

Other interests are the Normandy tart (he was born in Normandy). This is more cake-like with heavier pastry, and filled with custard like a moist clafoutis.

Leaving Parisian coffee behind, Melbourne’s version of Gontran Cherrier Boulangerie has St Ali coffee. This is smooth, strong, even and flavoursome, but balanced.

Atmosphere has been a little dull every time I have visited on a Sunday morning. But take-away is just as delicious.
