We recently hit up 98 Lygon in Brunswick East, and wow — it’s set to become a new local fave. Think cosy and fun while serving up really solid bistro fare.
The space itself mixes classic European bistro vibes with a Melbourne edge — heritage brick, timber beams, crisp tablecloths, and a buzz that gradually builds as the night goes on.
First thing to arrive: warm, crusty bread with salted butter. Simple, but done very well. This little start set the tone for the whole night — relaxed, friendly, and unpretentious.
The Shallot Tarte Tatin was served warm. It was nicely sweet with just the right punch of mustard — a novel combination.
The Asparagus with brown butter and whipped ricotta came next — massive spears cooked beautifully. Lemon is definitely optional with this one, there are enough flavours without it. My friend eating with me, who is a real foodie, said it was cooked perfectly, and honestly, she wasn’t wrong.
One of the things that really stood out were the sides. The chips were crispy and irresistible, and the Romano Beans had a great crunch with a bit of spice and a subtle pickled vibe that kept each bite interesting. There was a slight charcoal flavour that gave them a smoky lift, which I loved. Those green beans weren’t your average side — they had personality.
The Orecchiette with zucchini, pea, pesto and ricotta salata was fresh and perfectly al dente. Light, flavourful, and totally satisfying. The zucchini and pesto worked beautifully together.
The tomatoes were delightfully fresh. We loved the variety and quality of all the side dishes.
There is also a courtyard, and a private room that can comfortably seat twelve.
98 Lygon is casual enough for a weeknight dinner but also feels special enough to settle in for a longer meal with friends. We really enjoyed everything about this place from the atmosphere, service, entrees, sides, mains and desserts. They also have an extensive drink list. We’ll definitely be back soon.
