• Blackwork (Croydon)

Whilst Croyden may not be well known for cafes, it’s local Blackwork is renowned for coffee. We were invited to try the vegetarian offerings and take notes on the local brew.

Entering into the concrete floored, tiled and black painted walled establishment, the vibe was chilled. Succulents hang in glass terrariums and the park opposite adds a relaxed ambiance to the buzzing locale.

First, the coffee. With pretty swan latte art, an interesting rich malty flavour, and a strong crema, my flat white was one to enjoy and write about.

M indulged in an iced chocolate and admitted it was one of the better iced chocolates out there. What made it so good? They didn’t skimp on the ice-cream, it wasn’t too chocolatey and the quantities of ice-cream, milk and chocolate were exactly to her tasting.

The noodle bowl came with super soft tofu with a crispy shell; fried garlic; soft eggplant; cooked and dressed edamame, and plenty of sesames. The flavours were chilli, sweet and tangy. I enjoyed the combination of soft, crunchy, and the right amount of sauce without being drenched or dry. It was served warm.

The Super Bowl was a big serve of healthy goodness with firm roasted cauliflower, with a hint of lemon; pumpkin hummus, a sweet puree almost like a soft whipped custard; quinoa; kale; crisp, roasted chickpeas; sweet tomatoes; and corn kernels. M observed that the flavours weren't as strong as they could have been. To me, the flavours were in the hummus and I enjoyed it as a big healthy salad.

The blueberry pancakes were decadent, with caramel sauce and crushed nuts bringing it from brunch into dessert territory. I sought out the dark chocolate crunchy clusters with puffed cereal, which were not too sweet. The apricot jam added interest, and again was not too sweet.  The actual pancake was filling without being too dense. This dish looked delightful, with a taste to match.

Overall, we had a lot of fun trying Blackwork. I love that they have brought fun café life to Croydon, and that the locals are loving it as much as we were. There is an outside area, for those wanting more fresh air, and with the park in front, this is a lovely option.
