When a visitor to Melbourne says, ‘coffee?’ the only response can be, ‘where?’ And when my Sydney-sider friend was stuck in Melbourne over lock-down, the choice was West 48. I admit I had been here before, it was another friend’s favourite café for years, but it had been years, since I had visited so that I recognised the layout before the name.
This place is popular. Be prepared to wait for a table. Coffee is Allpress Espresso, service is friendly, menu is extensive.
The Mushroom Stack was a treat with mushrooms, haloumi, onion relish and a fried egg sprinkled with grated manchego. Delicious flavours, and a refreshing change from my own cooking, which I am thoroughly sick of.
Other tempting vego options include Sesame Scrambled Tofu (vegan), a Japanese fusion Brunch Bowl (vegan option available) and the classic avocado on toast.
If I lived closer, I have no doubt this would be one of my favourites too.
