• The Foreigner (Ivanhoe)

I rarely venture to Ivanhoe. This was my second time in the last decade – and my second time at The Foreigner Café. Busy with older locals reading newspapers and younger locals catching up with friends – this café is popular with all.

There are lots of tempting vegetarian treats on the menu, with inspo from global cuisines.

The Foreigners Breakfast is a highlight with crumbed and pan-fried eggplant, accompanied with a garlic labne and topped with herbs and poached eggs. The eggplant was crisp and well cooked, the labne smooth and flavoursome, the eggs perfectly poached. It was served with toasted sesame Turkish bread.

The coconut porridge is a heart-warming brunch. Oats are cooked in coconut milk and topped with poached pears, raspberry coulis and dried mulberries. My friend loved this dish and exclaimed that it was exactly what she had felt like. The serving was generous and the oats were filling.

My yummy flat white with cinnamon

With tables on the pavement, and modern décor inside, it is both trendy and relaxed.

I’m thinking more visits to this fun suburb, and café, are in order.
