Everyone loves doughnuts. And if you do nut, you need to try Oakleigh Donought Co. I was recently given a take home six-pack of these beauties. Here are just some of the flavours on offer, and what I thought.
Passion Fruit Meringue Pie
A sweet and thick meringue coated the top, and a thick and intensely tangy passionfruit cream filled the centre. The dough was soft and fluffy with a crisper edge. It was not too sweet. This was Mark’s favourite.
Galakdough
It was based on my favourite Greek dessert. So there was no saying no! The chefs gave this beauty a soft and fluffy dough with crisp edges (like the one above). This was generously filled with really creamy custard, and garnished with a mini dripper to add honey to taste.
Gluten Friendly Baked Brownie
Vegan, gluten free…Oakleigh Doughnut Co caters to everyone. This was a rich chocolate brownie, decorated with sweet mint cream and drizzles of icing. It looked a treat, but this one was a bit too sweet for me.
Baklava Cake
This was made with a thicker, fried dough to what I would call a more traditional styled doughnut. This was crispier too. The topping was crushed pastry and pistachio.
Picnic
The picnic came highly recommended and was my favourite. It was delectably more-ish. The top was covered with peanuts, salted caramel and chocolate. The dough was like that of the top two above.
Vegan Oreo Cream
I was impressed that the vegan oreo cream lacked nothing. The dough was still fluffy, the edges still crisp. Part of the trick to this was a light dipping of icing around the outside.
Overall, I would have to say this was the most interesting and extravagant doughnut tasting I have ever had. The Oakleigh Doughnut Co have gone out of their way to create interesting flavours that taste delicious. I really enjoyed the fluffy cake dough in particular and look forward to trying more flavours next time.
