Stop wondering why no one does hummus as good as Israel. Moshe Ittah has just solved the conundrum. Having moved to Melbourne in 2004, and doing the rounds at some of Melbourne’s top eateries, Moshe recently opened New Jaffa.
This little Middle Eastern hide-away on the quite end of Stanley Street serves up the best hummus I’ve tried in Melbourne, alongside other favourite Middle Eastern faves.
What makes it so good? It’s smooth, subtle and fresh. You will wipe the plate before ordering another serve.
The eggplant is also delicious. It is smoked until soft and flavourful, then served in strips with tahini and olive oil.
I usually dislike cucumber, but the chunks of it in this Fattoush were almost sweet with the zaatar and sumac spices. The best part of this one was the nuggets of crisp, fried pita.
This food is best for sharing. As a bigger dish, we ordered the sweet potato steaks. The sweet potato was cooked, then coated with spices and crisped on the edges before being sliced. This was served with slow cooked barley, currants, parsley and dill.
Other vegetarian mains include the on trend roasted cauliflower, spiced Moroccan curry and char-grilled lettuce.
For dessert, the Kanafeh was equally fresh and delicious with warm ricotta, shredded pastry and nuts.
Having opened in just 8 months ago, it is no wonder everyone is flocking to New Jaffa, despite its hidden location off the main drag. I will definitely be going back. Also to check out the lunch menu with hummus plates and pitas.
