• Black Alchemy Cafe (Blackburn)

This relaxed, but cosy, café is opposite train station and serving up decent meals and coffee for Blackburn locals and commuters. The space is chilled with pale matt, wood flooring, exposed brick and the radio playing pop songs. The front gets the afternoon sun, so does the courtyard out the back of the long, open space.

There are many veggie breakfast options. Lunch is more limited, with a pasta, Japanese bowl and burger. They also serve a tempting range of hot chocolates.

The veggie burger was layers of grilled mushroom and haloumi served hot and moist. At the bottom was red capsicum pickled into a relish; fresh, pale butter lettuce; and a sweet toasted brioche bun.

They forgot my chips but soon brought me a huge serve of extra hot crispy (fluffy in the centre) ones to enjoy.

I really liked the calm ambiance of this place. The food was good too.
