• The Jolimont (Forest Hill)

The Jolimont. Unless you know the street (after which it is named), you’ve probably never been to this little eatery. Set in the back streets of Forest Hill, it is a small and relaxed local café where you bump into your neighbours.

The food is simple but tasty. The décor is simple but pleasing. The service is simple but smiling. You get the idea…

Your coffee will be smooth in flavour and texture, without the fancy art required in the trendy suburbs. It will taste good (you can’t see it as you drink it anyway).

For vegetarians, there are a few options. I like the pumpkin focaccia. It is filled with slices of pumpkin, tasty cheese and pesto. It is a solid meal, as good as any you could prepare at home.

The Hash Breakfast, is another homestyle meal, with kidney beans stewed in tomatoes, a neat square of grated potato fried until crispy, and a fried, sunny-side-up egg with a runny yolk.

There is also mushroom bruschetta with fetta on multi-grain toast.

Sometimes it is good to get away from the pretention of fancy food and interiors. I come here when I am hungry. It is as good as any meal I could make at home. And, at the Jolimont, I could be home. There is my neighbour waving at me now.
