• Morris Jones (Chapel Street, Windsor)

There is something lovely about tradition.  Like fresh apricots at the beach in summer, or family get togethers at our favourite Japanese restaurant.  So after I went to the same cafe, with the same friend, on the same day, two weeks in a row, we were happy to call it a tradition in the hope that it would continue.

The cafe was Morris Jones, one of the less busy cafes on Chapel Street.  Don’t let this put you off.  Queues do not always signify quality, and peace and quiet with good service, does not mean the food will not be delicious.

The first time, I ordered poach eggs with croquettes and beans.

The second, I went for mushrooms.

Toast, beans, eggs, potato...not much interesting here?  In fact they could have made each boring, but they had added in their own personality into each of the sides.  The croquettes were large filled with mashed potato and strands of wilted spinach.  The outside was crisply fried.  The beans were house made and pleasantly sweet amongst the tomato base.  The eggs held runny yolks to prove they know how to poach.

The mushrooms were served on sourdough that had been spread with an intensely garlicky pesto.  The  Swiss browns had been baked and then topped with feta and garlicky, fried bread crumbs.  Watercress with drizzled balsamic finished the dish.

The coffee was good.

The atmosphere was pleasant.

The service friendly and prompt.

I guess there were enough reasons to keep us going back next week...and maybe the one after that too.
