I had been past this place a couple of times around dinner and was put off thinking it just specialised in sandwiches (unsuitable for an evening meal). But last week, my friend and I finally found an excuse to visit The Mess Hall at lunch time.
Busy and rustic, The Mess Hall caters to office workers of the city’s top end. There are a couple of vegetarian paninis. I ordered the vegetable lasagne. It came with a dressed mixed leaf salad with fennel shavings. The lasagna itself featured a tomato sugo heavily flavoured with white wine. Whilst claiming to be a vegetable lasagna, the bulk was composed of pasta sheets with a smidgen of eggplant and zucchini in between. Thin slices of parmesan garnished the top. At $17.50, the lasagna was not fantastic. The atmosphere was lively but with shared tables and unsupportive wooden stools, The Mess Hall is trendy rather than quality. This is not to say that I didn’t enjoy the meal and my friend’s company. But would I return? Probably not.
