• Basso

Basso looks more like a seedy food court from the front but there is a reason why it is always packed every lunch time.

There’s nothing like a big bowl of fresh pasta to get you through the day. Fast, authentic, cheap and tasty: Basso is a great find. Choose from a number of sauces and pastas. Whilst the pizzas by the slice aren’t bad, the pasta is definitely the highlight. I am a fan of the spaghetti Sicilian to which I add olives and lots of chilli. Customising your order is never a problem. The pesto is also good. Ask for mushrooms to be included with the pesto if you want something more nourishing.

The staff are friendly and helpful. You can choose to sit up stairs or in the noisy dining room down stairs. The waiters walk up and down serving you with a smile. On a sunny day, it is lovely sitting on the benches out the front and watching the crowds of Little Collins street wander. If you are organising a team lunch, Basso takes big group bookings and you can usually get one at last minute.

Remember to take a voucher from the front to get a free glass of wine or soft drink with your meal. Buon appetito!
